What is Sports Therapy?

Osteopathy is becoming increasingly popular throughout the world as it has been proven to help thousands of people. Many people visit their osteopath because they cannot manage their physical pain through medication. Osteopathy cannot fix everything but rest assured if we should find anything that we are unable to treat we will discuss further options which may include seeing other specialists. Osteopaths encourage musculoskeletal injuries to heal by using hands-on techniques for joints, muscles, nerves and ligaments. Osteopaths are qualified to diagnose and treat many injuries; they always explain the cause of a problem before treatment. Treatment is mostly hands-on as osteopaths try to relax tense muscles and get tight joints moving again. As Adam is also a rehabilitation specialist he often prescribes exercises to help speed the healing process.

According to the NHS website: “Osteopathy isn’t usually painful, although it’s not unusual to feel sore or stiff in the first few days after treatment, particularly if you’re having treatment for a painful or inflamed injury. Absolutely.

It doesn’t matter if you are an Olympian or a weekend warrior. Any injury,
that affects your sporting performance, can benefit from sports therapy.

Can children be treated by an Osteopath?2020-10-12T15:46:25+01:00

Absolutely, they just need to have an adult accompany them to all treatment sessions.

Aren’t sports massages better?2020-11-24T10:33:57+00:00

Both types of treatment help to get people out of pain…

If you don’t want to do any rehab exercises then I would tell you to get a sports massage. Just bear in mind that a massage will only give you short-term symptomatic relief, as it doesn’t change how you move.

But if you want somebody to show you how you can…

– Correct mechanical compensations which may have led to the issue arising in the first place. If not addressed these pre-disposing factors, can increase the risk of the same injury happening again.

– Optimise how you move so that mechanical compensations, don’t slow the healing process down.

Then you are better off seeing a sports therapist.

Aren’t physiotherapists better?2020-11-24T10:42:46+00:00

It comes down to the experience and skill-set of the therapist. Both physio’s and sports therapists work similarly, for instance, they both prescribe a lot of exercises.

Being able to assess the quality and quantity of movement is what makes the difference between a terrible and and an amazing movement specialist (physio + sports therapist)

Frankly a lot of sports therapists don’t have an “eye for movement”, its a hard skill to learn. But please dont believe the myth that all physiotherapists are exercise gurus. Many physios have only had one module on rehab exercise at university. In summary, I cannot tell you what type of movement specialist you should see.
